get original (stored) data when updating

Hi Friends:

I'd like to show the difference between the new and original data when doing an update. I figured I'd find a copy of the original data as obtained from the databse, but don't see it anywhere in the GC object. Does anybody have any idea other than fetching another copy for comparison?
